The Best Black Paint for your Home Projects

Feb 23

Sharing the very best black paint colour for your home projects… according to me. As well as 6 different projects I’ve used this paint for in the past few years.

The best black paint for your home projects

Now I know ‘the best’ is a stretch… but for me, this one is totally true.

I LOVE this black and thought it was time I put all the projects I’ve used it for in one place to show you how versatile this black paint is!

I get asked all the time about the colour because online, it looks pretty grey instead of black. But I promise you, out of the can it looks black. And it’s the perfect black because it’s not SO dark, it has almost a chalky undertone to the black and no other weird colours shining through in different lights. All the different lights, because again… I’ve used this everywhere.

So what’s your favourite black paint colour, Colleen?

Broadway by Behr

Broadway by Behr

We have 4 cans of this in our paint stash- interior semi gloss, outdoor matte, solid stain tinted this colour, and interior matte. My sister has the exterior satin black paint at her house as well… It truly is a favourite.

I thought I’d share all the projects I’ve used it for here in one place as long as which type of paint I used for each project. Just to really sell you on this one ;)

This black paint is available from Behr which is sold at Home Depot.

So let’s see it in action!

Black Paint for Interior Walls + Furniture

Here it is in all it’s glory- my primary bedroom is painted all black.

By keeping the trim, doors, and ceiling white, then adding some white textiles, the black walls really feel cozy and inviting but not SO dark. I use this ‘formula’ for dark bedrooms quite often. You can see a couple more dark bedrooms here.

This is an interior matte paint and I love how that looks on the modern picture frame moulding wall!

You can see this black primary bedroom makeover here.

I also painted those DIY stump tables black, we used Broadway by Behr in a semi-gloss for durability and I love how the texture still shines through but the black on black in this little window area is so moody and inviting.

You can definitely mix different sheens of black paint when you are taking on a project where both walls and furniture will be painted in the same space.

BlacK Paint for Interior Doors

Black patio doors in a white room

In the main area of my home, we’ve painted our patio doors black.

I love the contrast this brings to our mostly white space. Contrast doors add a pop of colour (or black!) without the work of painting your whole room. This is great for open concept spaces or for a playful touch to an otherwise ‘finished’ room. In this space, I really like the bright white, serene room but it was feeling unfinished and a bit bland. The black doors added just enough contrast to make it feel so much more interesting and welcoming.

The colour is… you guessed it! Broadway by Behr and this one is a semi-gloss for durability as well.

If I were to paint them again, I would definitely go with an enamel paint like we did on our vanity because that has held up more than perfectly. You can see a great post on painting with enamel paint for durability when we painted these mirror closet doors.

Black Paint for Outdoor Home Projects

If we take a step outside onto my patio, you’ll see… more Broadway by Behr!

We created a concrete wall cover for our ugly concrete retaining wall when we first moved in here and painted the whole thing black. I love the texture and contrast this adds to our space while hiding the ugly cement retaining wall. It has turned an eye sore into one of my favourite features in our backyard. It is the perfect backdrop for our outdoor dining area and lower red brick patio!

This one is painted a Matte exterior finish and just sprayed with a paint sprayer. See the DIY concrete wall cover tutorial here.

Peek above this wall and you’ll find our kids playhouse… also in Broadway by Behr!

For this one we chose to use a solid stain and you can read all about that in this post here. A solid stain will look like paint when applied properly and gives added benefits for outdoor wood application.

The black paint fits so beautifully with all the lush greenery that shows off all summer long. The wood details add some warmth and really, it’s just so pretty back here. I know black can feel like a bold choice, but it blends so beautifully into nature when you’re painting an outdoor fixture like a playhouse.

When we were picking colours for my sister’s deck makeover, I didn’t push Broadway by Behr. Through a process of elimination, she chose it herself and I was definitely excited about the choice. It’s honestly such a good black. She chose it for her black deck railing as well as all of her exterior trim on their cream coloured house. We also applied this black exterior paint with a paint sprayer.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing one paint colour in so many different applications. I always think it’s nice to get a feel for a colour in a space before deciding to use it. Sometimes the paint chips don’t do it justice, or other times there’s some wild undertones hiding in there!

    Hi there,

I love all paint upgrades in your home and you’ve motivated me and my husband to DIY paint walls in our all white wall home as well.

We are looking to paint our metal frame sliding doors on the inside and a few indoor walls. Since this our first DIY paint project I would love your insights as to which Sheen for each task and which Behr product (Dynasty, Marquee, Ultra, Premium plus) would you recommend.

    Appreciate your response! Thank you!

Hi Radihika! I love the enamel paint in a satin for metal doors! Indoor walls I’d go with an eggshell for wipability :)

I see you said you did a matte for your bedroom walls. How is the matte with clean up (wiping down, etc)? And what did you use to paint with: brush or roller, and no lines? I LOVE matte black but it feels intimidating. Talk to me about how to get the perfect “matte black.”

Also, what type of paint do you like for all interior walls: think living room, stairwell, hallway, etc? My FIL bought the paint for our house and I swear he bought the wrong “kind.” It looks globby and thick and there are lines; it’s awful!!!

Oh and speaking of: have you painted vinyl porch railings? Ours are white and get so gross with cobwebs and dirt and bugs. I want to paint black and repaint the shutters and door/door trim as well. Again, I’m so intimidated by paint.

I haven’t painted vinyl porch railings, but I would definitely try ab enamel~

As for interior walls, I typically go one down from the highest quality in a line. so at behr, I do the premium one, not the marquee and that’s great quality. I like matte but wouldn’t do it on walls you need to wipe often. I’d go for velvet maybe instead if you like that look! the higher the gloss, the better wipability :) We just rolled and brushed with no issues.

Great post! Gave me a few ideas for black paint projects.. I ultimately went with Cracked Pepper for a basement “computer wall,” but Broadway was one of the swatches in my hand….
