7 EASY WATERCOLOR PROJECTS

Jul 20

7 Easy watercolor projects for beginners that I have shared in my last 7 years blogging! They’re perfect watercolor paintings for home decor, gifts, and parties.

Beginner Watercolor Projects

We’re at that part of a renovation that really drags and it doesn’t feel like it’s moving forward, even if work is happening. We have trim to paint and some more siding to put up and evenings and weekends feel better used for taking the kids on bike rides and sipping coffee on the deck… so while we’re picking away at those bigger projects, I thought I’d share some smaller ones! I was using watercolour for some lettering the other day and realized I haven’t posted any watercolor lettering but I have posted a bunch of watercolour tutorials! So today I’m rounding them up for you!

These easy watercolor project tutorials are perfect for beginners- they’re all really simple. I’ve been playing with water color for a while but I keep it so basic- I’m so sure you’d have fun with any of these projects, even if it’s your first time using watercolor! I put this collection together as a YouTube video with 7 tutorials, but have a few more that don’t have videos that I’ve gone ahead and added in this blog post. So this is actually a round up of 10 tutorials for you ;) You can see the supplies I use for these at the veeeery bottom of this post!

But first… if you’d rather watch it on video, check it out!

YouTube video

Alright, and now let’s get into all the links! There’s even a few bonus ones in here that don’t have videos but step by step photos instead :)

Beginner Watercolor Tutorial

FLORAL MONOGRAM WATERCOLOR

This is a more recent project and I really love it so much! It looks a bit more complicated than the other projects in this round up, but it’s really not. There’s no blending of colours at all! Plus there’s a video tutorial to walk you through it! Check it out here.

I love this simple watercolor painting duo! And the video tutorial makes it so easy to make.

2 SUPER SIMPLE WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS

This is one of the first watercolor tutorials I ever posted… ever. So believe me when I tell you it’s simple as can be! Plus, it really is such a decor winner- I’ve had these for years now and still love them. See the tutorial here.

Simple Watercolor leaves tutorial- love how modern and easy this art is!

2 BOTANICAL WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS

This video tutorial shows you how to make two different botanical pieces! I love all the texture in this piece- it’s perfectly summery. Check them out here.

SIMPLE SILHOUETTE WATERCOLOR TUTORIAL

This is a tutorial for a cute easter bunny- I give you the outline and share how to fill it in with this blended watercolor and I still pull this guy out every Easter years later but this easy watercolor tutorial could be used for ANY silhouette or shape. So check it out here then get creative with which silhouette you’ll make!

I love this nature inspired neutral autumn tablescape- so perfect for thanksgiving (or friendsgiving!)

WATERCOLOR AND INK PLACECARDS

These watercolor and ink placeards are so so pretty in person. I offered these ones (the brown wash) as a free printable in this post. I summarized the process to make your own in the above roundup video. This is one of the bonus projects I share in my Learn Brush Lettering E-Course!

Watercolor Banner Cake Topper

WATERCOLOR BANNER CAKE TOPPER

This is a DIY I made for a friends site years before I figured out how to make a great video. But it has a timelapse of the process, so you can totally follow the tutorial easily still. This cake topper is super cute and now that I’ve looked at it again, I think it’ll be coming out at the next birthday party I host! Check it out here!

Painting watercolor on wood signs- DIY foggy trees tutorial!

FOGGY WATERCOLOR TREES ON WOOD

This painting is actually one of my favourites I’ve ever created. I have it up in my office and gave a second one to a family member. Clearly I love painting in black and blue watercolors… but can you blame me? They’re such a great combo! I painted this one on wood. Did you know you can paint watercolor on wood? Check out the tutorial here!

Simple Abstract Art DIY

MODERN ABSTRACT WATERCOLOR

This is another easy watercolor painting I created for someone else’s site! I called this one modern abstract art at the time but I’m not sure why I didn’t lean into the ‘space’ look of this one. How rad would this be in a space themed room or with a quote about the stars hand lettered on it? It’s super simple to make! Check it out here.

OK I cut it off here because those are the watercolor ‘paintings’ tutorials I have but there’s so many more watercolor posts on this blog. So… Bonus? These ‘watercolor’ party cups are so pretty and simple to make from dollar store supplies… I used this same technique for these bumble bee cups and hats! And since we already talked about watercolor on wood… This watercolor wood star mobile is sooo pretty and I was hella sad when the twins started standing and broke it. Every mobile we’ve ever owned eventually broke at the hands of the babe in the crib. Ha! If you happen to be reading this in the spring, this watercolour easter wreath is super cute too! I also made this art with a watercolor background and cheaters silver foil. And if your toddlers love watercolor, this is a fun way to display their art! Lastly- If you want to test out lettering with watercolor, might I suggest a practice sheet? I show how I do that here!

And as I’m even rounding up these bonus options I’m not sharing the printables I’ve made with watercolor… so if you want to check out ALL of my watercolour blog posts… do that here! So this post of 7 easy watercolor projects turned out to be a lot more than that, but I hope you had as much fun checking out these projects as I had rounding them up!
