How to Decorate For Spring Without Adding Clutter

Apr 24

Decorating for spring after Easter is over doesn’t need to be difficult, here’s some simple tips to decorate your home for spring without adding clutter.

I love spring and all that it stands for. I love the warmer days, the sunshine pouring in and the start of my garden coming to life. I also love switching up my home decor to reflect the season. But after Easter… spring decorating isn’t as easy as putting a bunny sign out and a bowl full of easter eggs. So how do you decorate for spring?

Today I’m sharing 8 tips to make spring decorating simple.

Spring Decorating with city gardens in kamloops- photo of open concept show apartment with light wood floors and kitchen

Today I’m excited to partner with the City Gardens development in Kamloops, BC to share some tips for decorating your home for spring without adding clutter. They invited me into their Sales Centre & Show Suite to photograph these tips for you.

I love that I am able to show you how these tips that I’m always sharing can work in any space- even homes that don’t have the same style as my own.

City Gardens is a new development that’s being built by Kelson Group. They have a couple different finishing options, but the design is modern, sleek but also warm and welcoming. I love the light wood colours of the Dune kitchen that you can see in these photos! The show suite is decorated in a modern contemporary style, it was fun to add some spring decor to the space.

These tips for spring decorating will also be so great for renters- I didn’t hang anything on walls or doors, just switching up surface decor so if you’re in a situation where you can’t make holes in the wall or make any major changes but still want to add some fresh updates to your space for the season, this will be perfect!

Alright, let’s get to it!

1. Clear the room Before Decorating the Space

The first thing I like to do when I’m refreshing any space for the season is to clear it all out. I clear anything off surfaces that I’m not 100% confident that I’d like to leave there. Myquillan Smith calls this ‘quieting the room’ and I love this concept.

It’s so easy to leave something in the same spot for years, clearing the room can help you see things differently. If nothing else- it makes giving those surfaces a quick spring clean a breeze!

2. Consider Adding Colour

I’m a lover of neutrals for home decor. I love how effortlessly they work together with my cozy modern style and pretty much every other decor style. But spring calls for a little bit of colour, if you ask me. By starting with a neutral palette for your more permanent home decor pieces, you can add in accents seasonally to add pops of colour.

Over the years in my own home, I’ve added bursts of bright blue into my spring home decor or pops of green.

For the City Gardens condo show suite, I chose to add some rose tones. I love how beautiful the subtle pinks work with the warmer wood tones and brown furniture pieces. They also play really well with sage green (like their feature walls).

You can see I pulled in pinks with the florals but also the napkins on the kitchen counter, the vase on the dining table and the throw blanket on the sofa. I also pulled in some terracotta tones for some spring cheer.

These are simple and only a couple pieces of decor to bring into your home for the season but make such a great impact towards that cheerful, spring feeling we’re looking for.

3. Swap printables, photos or art

You know how much I love my printables. One of my tips I share every season and every home tour is to switch out art, signs, or printables for the season. It’s an easy way to get a fresh look without adding any clutter to your space.

The show suite had permanent art hung, paintings from local artist Debbie Milner Lively of the old houses that once lived at the address of the new development. I thought that was such a great way to honour that history!

Instead of changing the wall art, I added this to the countertop. A simple black and white hand lettered piece makes a statement without being overly *spring*. I hand lettered this one, but you can find a printable spring black and white piece here if you’d like!

Styling this printable on the countertop brings me to my next tip… creating vignettes.

4. Create vignettes

I’m cautious not to add too much decor to surfaces in my home to avoid clutter. We are a busy family and we need all the surfaces we can get for setting down the cup of coffee to help a kid reach something high or displaying kids creations for the evening. But I also love switching up my decor (why we’re talking how to decorate for spring without adding clutter!). One of the ways I do this is to create specific spaces in my home for vignettes.

So, what is a vignette in home decor? A vignette is a small grouping of objects that can make a beautiful statement for decor. By creating permanent homes for vignettes, you’re not tempted to add little decor touches to every single surface, taking over your practical spaces.

In the kitchen, this could be a couple of beautiful cookbooks paired with an aesthetically pleasing bottle, oil or spice.

In the living room, it could be a stack of books, a vase and a candle with candle tools.

In the bedroom, perhaps it’s your journal, a book for bed and a small plant.

These don’t need to be fancy or strictly decor items. I love to mix in practical pieces to my decor. Plants that clean the air, candles for scent, cookbooks I can look through.

5. Change up textures for linen and casual fabrics

Another simple swap you can make for the season is your fabrics. I love a good faux fur blanket in the winter, but in the spring? Bring out the linen!

Casual woven fabrics make such a beautiful replacement for those heavier winter throw blankets and pillows.

Not only can you add colour in this way (like that pretty pink throw!), you can add texture in and pattern as well. On the patio, I’ve added a floral throw blanket for some practical spring decor. Florals for spring are always a good idea. And ground breaking ;)

6. Add seasonal Flowers and Foliage (faux or real!)

Did I say flowers are always a great idea? Yes, yes they are. No matter the season, I love to swap foliage and florals in my vases for a seasonal variety. There’s no season that calls for this more than spring.

Spring tulips and branches are such an easy way to instantly give your home a spring feeling. Plus- flowers add so much cheer to your home, they always brighten my mood.

You can choose real flowers and foliage (all the flowers in this space are real) or faux (all the branches in this space are faux). I love to head to my backyard and snip some branches or some flowers, but before those burst into bloom, we’re leaning on store bought flowers and faux branches.

Having a handful of vases that you can swap in to display your flowers and branches is a great idea to have on hand so you can take advantage of those backyard blooms when they start coming in the spring!

I like to choose vases that have a narrower neck than base to make it easy to arrange flowers without a flower frog or tape. You can see that I’ve chosen a variety of vases (these ones are mostly from Far & Wide in Kamloops) shapes, textures and colours, but they all have that narrower neck in common.

7. When in doubt, add plants!

In addition to cut flowers and branches, living plants are also such a great way to bring some spring life into your home. Plants are of course great decor year round (one of my favourite ways to decorate!) and can be added to pretty much any room in your home.

Choose a playful pot with a beautiful texture or some spring colours and add an easy to care for plant and you’re well on your way to filling your bookshelves with joyful spring decor.

Any time I feel like a space is a little lackluster, I start by adding a plant. I love how it instantly adds some life to the space. Give it a try, I can bet you’ll love it :)

8. Consider your scents

The last tip towards decorating for spring without adding clutter I want to share today is to consider scents. A seasonal scent can instantly change the feeling of a space. You can do this with fresh florals, a diffuser or with candles.

It’s a small update that can double as decor and really makes such a great difference in how your home feels. Add a candle to a vase or plant for a super simple small vignette.

I love fresh floral scents, but if I’m going for candles or diffusers, I choose citrus or fresh scents for spring.

In this post, I’ve shared photos of these ‘how to decorate for spring without adding clutter’ tips in action at the City Gardens Development Show Suite in Kamloops, BC. I use all these same tips in my own home each spring. You can see them in action in my past spring home tours right here and right here.

SPRING HOME TOUR- apartment with modern contemporary furnishings

The great thing about these tips to decorate for spring is that they are so versatile and applicable to any style home decor. Farmhouse? You can still add plants, pops of colour and spring scents. Industrial? Hey, plants, printables and branches are still going to work beautifully in your space! Modern contemporary apartment like this show suite? You got it!

If you would like more information on the City Garden’s development by Kelson Group, you can find their website right here. I’m so excited to watch this modern organic architecture come to life in our downtown.
