DIY Pokemon Party

Nov 06

This DIY Pokemon Party is easy to throw together last minute with dollar store supplies and some crafts.

DIY Pokemon Party Theme

If you have any Pokemon fans in your household, this DIY Pokemon Party is such a fun idea for your next kids birthday party theme! We crafted this party from dollar store supplies and it was a total hit with our 6 year old. While I didn’t manage to snap too many photos before the birthday party chaos ensued, I’ve put all the crafty details right here in one place.

Pokeball cake with candles

I love to make a simple party backdrop behind a food table. It keeps all the decor in one place and makes a big impact without a ton of decor.

For this one, we painted paper plates half red, then used black paint with white sticker dots to make Pokeballs and scattered them on the wall. Paper plates are such a great crafting supply to have on hand- you can see how I used them for a LEGO party right here!

I added some balloons that I blew up at home (this thing is a game changer if you find yourself blowing up balloons often!) using a balloon garland tape (also a game changer, you can reuse it!) and we picked out a gold giant 6 balloon from the dollar store as well.

I normally skip a table cloth and just let our live edge table shine (like here), but he was pretty set on red- so we just grabbed a dollar store table cloth.

The pinata is a DIY… but a total cheat. There was an affordable soccer ball pinata from the dollar store (Canadian Dollar stores aren’t all $1 items btw, I know that always confuses my American friends!) that we took all the black off of and added red to the top. You can just use red streamers and double sided tape for this, I cut a fringe into it after it’s all attached.

We used a black posterboard to cut the black line and circle out of. It turned out so cute! You can see more about making a DIY pinata right here if you’d rather make one from scratch. I like to set the pinata out on the table as part of decor if it’s on theme. I just set this one on an upside down bowl as a stand. You can see I set out the LEGO pinata for decor as well. It helps fill space and is so fun.

Other than that, the only other decor we added was the cake. I just make cakes from box cakes to save some budget on these parties. I used red icing to ice the top half of the cake and black to make the lines. You can buy both these colours from the baking aisle in the grocery store and they’re relatively affordable- definitely saves you on a bakery cake!

We also made a few activities other than the pinata for the kids. My older kids helped with these. We printed off different pokemon and hid them around the house for a scavenger hunt, we printed off these make your own pokemon cards as well as these ispy pokemon printables, and we made a pokemon toss game.

They chose their favourite pokemons to have on the dollar store trash cans. We made the pokeballs out of dollar store styrofoam balls. The kids had so much fun with these! Since his birthday is right in the middle of the winter, finding activities that get kids energy out is so important- especially when they’re younger.

DIY Pokemon Party Theme

As long as my kids are happy with at-home birthday parties, we’ll keep having them! I love that other than decorating the table and making some snacks, we get to sit back and sip coffee while they run around having a great time. Next time I’ll just remember to snap a photo of the party table before they start snacking ;)

I’ll leave it at that! It was so much fun to make one of the kids’ favourite things into a party theme. If you are looking for more party ideas for kids, you can see all of our kids parties below!
