Modern Neutrals Fall Home Tour

Sep 17

Sharing my home all decorated for autumn… without the orange (yet!). Welcome to my modern neutrals fall home tour!

Modern Neutrals Autumn Home Tour

I am never quite sure how to start home tour blog posts. Welcome! Come on in! It’s my house! I decorated for fall! Ha- either way… it’s home tour time! This week is the Seasonal Simplicity fall home tour week and today it’s my turn to share along with some other amazing bloggers! You can see them all down at the bottom of this post, but if you’re here from Life is a Party… welcome!

I know a lot of bloggers would break this up into a few blog posts. Modern neutrals fall living room decor… How to decorate a kitchen for fall… whatever it might be. But I kind of like having it all in one place!

I also kind of like only writing one blog post… because I’m pretty tired this time of year. Back to school is crazy, friends! My kids are in grade one and I didn’t expect this year to be just as exhausting as kindergarten. But yep! I think this is the normal for back to school! Did I mention september birthdays?!  We are also still renovating our house. We’re working hard on our basement right now which is equally exciting and tiring. So when it came to decorating for fall, I didn’t have much energy left for it. BUT I really wanted to do it. Last year, we skipped fall decor completely until mid October. We were mid renovation on our whole main floor and I remember Emmitt telling me that it was sad we didn’t even have a pumpkin for fall. So we were definitely going to make it happen.

First off… I made a video of the tour if you’d prefer that!

Now for the photo version and way more details ;)

I did make a couple small DIYs for the season (that I’m obsessed with), but beyond that… I stuck to what I know and love. Florals and foliage and tiny pumpkins. And it’s perfect and there’s no orange to be seen. That’s a win in my books ;) We will totally be getting classic orange pumpkins when the big ones for halloween hit our stores though. I know our kids will insist on it and I love all that seasonal magic stuff.

Simple touches for fall decor in this autumn home tour

Beautiful wild fall floral arrangement

Let’s talk about these flowers for a minute. And my longstanding favourite way to decorate… with foraged foliage. I typically decorate for the seasons with foraged foliage. And I totally love that. The leafy arrangement on my island from this home tour still stands out in my mind as my favourite fall decor to date. But this year I couldn’t pull it together to get out. And my house was a mess. And I was tired. So I stopped in to my fave floral shop (Fern and Frond if you’re in Kamloops!) and ordered a fall arrangement. I marked the date I’d get it on my calendar and cleaned my house top to bottom, then went and picked it up as my reward for cleaning. And on my way home, stopped at my dad’s garden to cut some blooms that coordinated with the colours Chelsea had put in my arrangement. I’m OBSESSED with this. I wish it would last forever here.

I know myself and I know there’s no better reward than flowers so this totally worked for me! Now can someone please suggest to Shane that he should buy me flowers every time I clean the house? K? Thanks, friends. I know you have my back ;)

I put flowers everywhere this year. Too bare? Flowers. Too boring? Flowers. Needs a bit more? How about a mini pumpkin. More mini pumpkins! They come with 6 in a bag, after all! I put them on end tables, kitchen counters, our dining table, nightstands and our mantel. And they bring me joy every time I see them.

Fall DIY Acrylic Sign... love this hand painted look! 'Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall'

Other than the mini pumpkins and flowers… I made these acrylic signs! You can see the tutorial for them here and if you’d like to make the leaf one, you can grab that free cut file here. Then I also made a tea towel for my kitchen using files from my line art bundle. I love how simple and modern this is while still having that fall leaves look.

Natural autumn decor for a modern home tour

Speaking of simple decor in the kitchen… one of my fave things to do in the fall is to swap my bowl full of bananas and oranges for squash. I just hide the bananas in my cupboard, because Calder would certainly not be okay if I stopped buying them. But it instantly makes everything look fall! And then we eat them. Squash risotto is my suggestion if you’ve never tried them before ;)

Baby pumpkins for simple fall decorating

Oh! And I did want to showcase my olive tree making a comeback. It had NO leaves left on it, you guys. It looked like a goner but I’ve been babying it so much and look at all the leaves! That’s not fall decor but it might be the thing I’m most proud of in the house right now. Ha!

DIY leather pennant for thanksgiving

But my fiddle leaf fig looks like it’s having some issues with that sad spotted leaf. Plants are hard, you guys! That little ‘grateful’ pennant in the living room is a DIY I made a couple years ago. I love that thing. It’s the only piece of fall decor that I could find this year, but I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out where the box of the rest of it is. Next year, I’ll have it all and I’m already decided where I’m putting some of my faves! Like this! And this!

Simple Fall Mantel Decor with black, white and natural details

Since I couldn’t find most of my fall decor, I picked up two fake pumpkins for the mantel. I don’t remember the last time I went shopping for seasonal decor. I always make it! Or forage it! It was such a treat. The wooden look one is beautiful but that green heirloom one was my fave. Notice how I said was? Calder totally managed to smash a plastic pumpkin tonight. *sigh* But if you’re interested, I wrote a whole post about this mantel and my approach to LESS decorating for seasons right here!

Neutral decor for autumn... love these touches!

Modern fall wreath... so simple, it could be up all year long!

Modern fall wreath... so simple, it could be up all year long!

I kept the entryway simple and just swapped the green wreath from this summer with a metallic one I made a few years ago out of a garland at christmas time. I love how subtle it is in this space. I think this is going to be my go-to wreath for fall and late winter when the evergreen decor has run it’s course! I also swapped up my letterboard, of course for a fall saying. I love this one! I had already used my very favourite fall quote on my acrylic sign DIY so had to go searching for new ones and I feel like this one might be my new fave. It’s so good, right?!

Also, my dad was over, working with Shane to frame the basement so I definitely roped him into snapping a photo of me putting together some blooms! I may have also had him take some new headshots for me. It’s been 5 years and two babies since my last one so it’s about time!

Alright, that is it, that is all! There are SO MANY MORE amazing home tours in the Seasonal Simplicity hop so if you’re looking for some fall decor inspiration… this is definitely the right place! Hop around and check them out… or start with the next beautiful space in the tour… Cassie Bustamante’s kids rooms!

It’s called Dakota by General Paints (canadian), but it’s almost identical to sherwin williams thunderous :)
