DIY Foiled Valentines & Free Printable

DIY Foiled Valentines Day Cards- I love that purple foil! Plus I love that you can do this with a simple laminator

Can you believe that January is over halfway over!? That means that Valentines Day is just around the corner! If you’ve been following along with Lemon Thistle for a few years (seriously, how have I been blogging this long!!?), you might remember that ever year I create a Valentines Day card for you to print or make… or this year it’s both in the form of DIY foiled valentines! I know it’s no secret that I LOVE me some foil. I love the shine and I love that there’s none of the mess of gold leaf or glitter. It’s the best type of crafting.

Today I’m sharing these two printable Valentines cards PLUS how to foil them or any other design your heart desires. Yep… any printed design. Ready?

DIY Foiled Valentines Day Cards- I love that purple foil! Plus I love that you can do this with a simple laminator

TO MAKE YOUR OWN FOILED VALENTINES DAY CARDS, YOU’LL NEED:

  • Card design printed on cardstock by a laser printer*
  • Paper cutter
  • Deco Foil in colors of your choice (I used Amethyst Watercolor & Champagne)
  • Scissors
  • Piece of plain paper
  • Hot Laminator (anyone works, this is the one I use)

*Whatever you print off… it HAS to be printed by a laser printer to work. That means toner… not ink. Inkjets won’t transfer the foil. K? Don’t ignore me here!

Before I get to the instructions… I made a video! It’s one of my goals to get more efficient at video editing this year, so I thought why NOT give myself another video to edit? ;) I’ve also included photo instructions and text below.

YouTube video

So you can print off any design you like for this… it could be a printable from another site, something you designed yourself OR you can use mine. Like mine? Oh! Why thank you, that’s sweet of you! You can grab it for free to print off RIGHT HERE. I spotted a comment on a post about this that basically said we can’t all afford a laser printer. Guess what? I don’t have one! If you send your design to Staples or any print shop… the’ll print it off on a laser printer. So to get these two sheets of cardstock printed- it cost me about a dollar. So please don’t buy a laser printer just for this, K?

Once you have your designs printed off, go ahead and cut them to size! I love my little paper cutter for straight lines on things like this but if you don’t have one, you can totally use scissors. If you are thinking you want to buy a paper cutter… I say do it BUT you really don’t need a heavy duty one. I’ve had a big chop style one and a big roller one and when I got one of these little guys a couple years ago, I gave those other ones away. This is way easier to store and works just as good. And I think I found mine (I have two) for like $16… so that’s totally reasonable.

Next, cut your Deco Foil sheets down to size! It’s been a little while since I ordered foils (I have a bit of a stockpile going!) so the colors I used have been around for a while. I used the Champagne for that XO and the Amethyst Watercolor for the purple. I really love how these two played together! I also used the New Penny that is that pinkish one you see in some of the process photos. When I went to link them for you I spotted SO MANY pretty pinks too. So if you like pink…there’s options ;)

Here’s where it gets a bit tricky. If you want to do the whole design one color- you’re simple. Just cut a piece to size, lay it over and put your design and foil into a folded sheet of regular ol’ paper to put through your laminator. Always make sure to put the silver side down and the foil looking side up and use the ‘hot’ setting on your laminator (mine has hot or cool). IF you want to do more than one color- I found that the sheets didn’t like to be put through the laminator twice. That means that… that photo above didn’t work the greatest, I peeled back the heart THEN put the next colour on and sent it through the laminator. What you should do? layer them. I show this in the video. Cut your pieces to size and you can layer the allover color over the smaller cut piece. This worked way nicer. If this doesn’t make total sense- the video does a better job. Promise.

So… that’s really it! Just layer the Deco Foil over the design and run in through… isn’t that awesome? I want to FOIL ALL THE THINGS! Like every printable I’ve ever made. Foil is coming for you ;) I hope you enjoyed this simple tutorial! If you test it out for yourself- I’d so love if you shared it with me!

Ok I need to get this laminator! Ever since my swapp broke I’ve tried a few and they’ve all utterly failed.
