DIY Story Stones

Jan 16

Now that Christmas is long gone, I can start sharing some DIY gifts I was working on before the holiday! Today I’m excited to show you how easy it is to whip up some story stones for a little creative in your life. While there is a ton of dry time- the steps are super simple.

My niece is a storyteller. It’s what she loves- in fact for Christmas she wrote our babes a story book about all the cousins (best gift we received this year by far!). When I saw these stones popping up all over Pinterest and Etsy, I knew this was the perfect gift for her. I love that these stones encourage creativity, make believe, and can be used in so many ways.

I scoured the web for some inspiration (I’m not an artist so had to pick things that were easy to draw) and loved the looks of stones from Story Stones Lou on Etsy. I knew I wanted to include a barn for my niece because she’s a total farm girl.

I had a bunch of river rocks that I’d gotten from a dollar store years ago for weddings. I washed them up and picked out some of the smoothest ones. I used acrylic paints and, one colour at a time, started painting! It took several coats before the colours were opaque because of the smooth surface.

Once they were dry, I coated them in some clear varnish I had to prevent them from chipping. Plus they look nice and shiny after this step.

I used a muslin bag to keep them all together and hand lettered ‘Story Time’ and ‘These Story Stones Belong To:’ on the bag.

I love how they turned out! And with the supplies on hand, this awesome gift was super affordable. Did you DIY any gifts for the holidays this year? I’d love to hear what you tackled!

You definitely should! My niece loved them, we had story time right then and there.
