DIY Handlettered Canada Art PLUS an Exciting Announcement

Mar 15

Love this! DIY Canadian cities art- love that it's modern and not all red. It's a DIY without any art skills- so perfect!

***Update, so it looks like I’ve made yet *another* spelling error! They’re totally my jam, you guys. I’ve updated your free printable to be correct and will make sure the giant version is spelled right ;), thank you for the sweet messages on this one!***

I’m pretty darn excited for this post today, you guys! If you are Canadian, I’m sure you’ve heard that we’re celebrating Canada 150 this year and it’s getting me all Canada proud. A few years back I made a Canadian Cities art print and honestly, I still totally love it even though that’s like 1000 years ago in my lettering style. Today I am sharing a fun refresh I gave to that print (I made it into a DIY!) and I’m sharing some extra exciting news.

News first? Yeah, okay… you twisted my arm ;) I’m so excited to be working on a GIANT project for Canada 150 that will hang out at my local mall (Aberdeen Mall, I’m lookin’ at you!). It’s basically this little art piece that I made here… but more giant, more rustic, white writing, and 3 panels. Think 7 feet tall big (and three of them!!). If you want to see a mockup… you can check it out here (keep it super secret though, will ya?). It will hang out in the mall for almost two months for a selfie competition (so get your mugs ready, friends) and I could not be more excited. That’s pretty rad, right? I will be sharing sneak peeks and project updates on my Instagram stories as I go but Shane was really loving on the Canadian cities panel, so I thought I’d make one to hang in our home that matched our decor.

UPDATE! IT’S DONE! CHECK IT OUT HERE

PLUS I needed to test out my process. After my friend Virginia shared that she uses iron on vinyl for her wooden signs, I knew that would save me 1000 hours of painting and stencilling on a project this big. So I’ve partnered with Cricut to use their Iron on Material. After I iron on over 100 square feet of lettering… I’m going to write a post with all my tips and tricks for you… because by then, I’m expecting to have some good ones ;)

I chose to use an unstained birch with black lettering to keep with the neutral thang we have going on in our home- a little bit scandi, a little bit modern. I really love how simple and striking the black lettering is against the natural wood. It is one of Shane and my favourite things I’ve made for art in our home in a while so it will be staying up year round- not just for Canada Day celebrations. Why not hang a bit of Canada on your wall all the time?

So this little sign was SO simple to make. I just purchased a piece of birch plywood from Michaels (about $3 with a coupon!) and since it’s all smooth and needs no prep all I had to do was cut out my design using my Cricut Explore, weed it, and iron it on. If you want to make your own sign before Canada Day, you can use my Canadian cities lettering (for personal use only)- grab it right here:

Alright… that’s it for today! I can’t wait to share the big project with you guys. Also. If you use the lettering and make your own sign I’d LOVE to see it! Shoot me an email colleen@lemonthistle.com or tag me on social @colleenpastoor.
