2 Dark and Moody Bedrooms

Sep 21

Sharing 2 dark and moody bedrooms in our AirBnB rental home makeover! These rooms are cozy and welcoming with dark walls, light furnishings, tons of classic wood details, and modern decor.

Dark and cozy green bedroom makeover

Today I’m so excited to share the first two reveals of the Tux House main floor with you. I am so proud of how these spaces turned out on our super short timeline and our budget. They are cozy and welcoming and still that modern classic style I was aiming for in this remodel.

Most of our budget and time in this remodel went to the bathroom and kitchen. The bedrooms really just saw a fresh coat of paint, an updated fan and window coverings and of course… furniture and decor! I love that dark paint can instantly change how a room feels without doing much else, it truly is incredible.

Cozy brown bedroom makeover

We did need to keep fans in the rooms so we updated those and we wanted to highlight all the original wood in the home. Knowing that, we built our plans that you can see in this blog post.

Let’s take a peek back to the ‘before’s of these bedrooms!

(see the whole house before here)

I know… it’s hard to even tell them apart, they were both just a creamy white with all the mini blinds and that beautiful original wood floor/door situation. But they’re two separate rooms, promise ;)

If you’re new to Lemon Thistle, I really am a sucker for dark and moody bedrooms. My current bedroom is black. My old bedroom was navy. And last year I helped my sister make hers over and we chose a dark green bedroom. I’d prefer to paint every wall in a bedroom instead of just a feature wall- it’s like a cozy little space just for relaxation and I love that. Plus since the rest of the house usually isn’t dark, it feels like a totally separate space where you can retreat.

Moody Taupe Bedroom Makeover

Okay let’s take a peek into these dark and moody bedrooms! Let’s start with the king room, shall we? In this room we had only one small window to work with so to add some character, I decided to add a feature wall. I love me a classic picture frame feature wall- I have a tutorial for a picture frame feature wall here, and did the same in my sister’s green bedroom makeover last year too. It’s classic, I don’t see this style of feature wall going out of style.

I partnered with Metrie for this feature wall. They are Canadian and have the most beautiful mouldings from prepainted shiplap like I used here to classic mouldings like I chose for this wall.

The moulding I chose for this wall is actually called panel mould, it’s from the Modern Farmhouse {M} line. I love how the one edge is flat and the other slopes so beautifully. It’s actually the same trim we chose and purchased for the edging of the basement suite beadboard… I guess I’m trying to say I truly do love it ;)

Brown bedroom makeover

This paint colour is a tricky one. I chose it back at our house in BC and we don’t have all the warm wood elements that this home does. It’s called Taos Taupe from Benjamin Moore and is definitely a taupe… with brown undertones. But once we got it on the wall, my sister thought it was grey or even blue! It’s a shape shifter with the warmer wood tones and it’s really just so inviting.

Since we had a couple wood tones in the room already (and brown on the walls), I wanted to keep the furniture out of the wood tones. I was looking for a black metal bed when I spotted this blue metal bed on for a smoking deal. Under $300 for a king bed frame? Heck yes! I had planned to paint it since the online photos made it look *bright* blue, but in real life it’s a muted blue and so very pretty with the gold caps. We layered white textured bedding and some throw pillows and the room started coming together so beautifully.

We added this bright white rug (also a FB Marketplace find) to the room and floor length white curtains. I love how these bounce some light around and keep this cozy room feeling breezy and not too heavy. We added some gold frames with watercolour I’d painted years ago (they’re so easy to DIY!) and some cute table lamps from IKEA. Since I believe no room is complete without a plant… we added one hanging in here as well.

I feel like this recipe of dark walls, light bedding and curtains, add a plant, simple art (and an accent moulding wall if possible!) and lots of texture works perfectly for pretty much any bedroom update.

Really… we could sum this whole blog post and pretty much every bedroom I’ve shared with that recipe- ha!

Dark Green Bedroom with wood trim

In the second bedroom, we did the exact same thing, just less the moulding wall.

I’m obsessed with this colour of green with all the wood features. Isn’t it stunning? It’s called Forest Floor from Benjamin Moore and it’s so dang pretty. In here we weren’t able to find a rug in our budget or do a moulding wall and it still looks… amazing. Or at least I think so ;)

The window placement in this room made it a bit trickier to choose a headboard wall. When we purchased the house, the bed was under a window. We decided to switch it around and put the bed against the only solid wall. It just felt much more inviting to walk into a room with more open space rather than right into the foot of the bed. We found this bed frame and dresser on FB marketplace and I painted the dresser a charcoal colour.

Add in some bright, white, textured bedding and some floor length white curtains and the room already looked and felt so much better. I added some dried florals from my garden and a raven ZZ plant which does well in lower light spaces. I also chose some fun art for this room which I think really pulls the whole space together. (Disclosure: These prints (Frida and Floral Statue) are from The Poster Store, they’d sent them for a Pinterest collaboration).

That’s it! I’m truly so happy with these spaces and how they came together on a tight budget and super tight timeline. We spent a few weeks painting the entire house (that’s when we did the moulding wall) but the rooms were filled with furniture and decorated in just a couple days. I’m sure one day I’ll head back out there and tweak and add, but for now I think they’re so cozy and welcoming for guests to stay!

I’d love to hear- which of the two dark and moody bedrooms do you like best? I keep going back and forth- that green has my heart, but the moulding wall with that hanging plant are just making it hard to commit either way!

Tux House is our rental property in Calgary, Alberta. Located in the inner city neighbourhood of Tuxedo, this 1940’s charmer has a main floor & basement suite that we’ve shared the transformation of here on Lemon Thistle!

So gorgeous! They are both lovely, but the green one is my favourite. I really love the pink artwork against the green wall too.

The pink is such a fun pop of colour! I don’t usually choose colourful pieces so I’m glad they look so nice together :)
