‘Mine + Yours’ Painted His and Hers Pillow Covers

Mar 12

Mine and yours lettered on white pillow covers; text overlay reads, "DIY Painted Pillow Cases"

I’m so excited for this DIY, you guys! I have always thought those his and hers pillow cases you see all over Pinterest are super cute, but the thought of DIYing something you sleep on just hasn’t seemed like a great idea. I just don’t want vinyl sticking to my face or paint scratching my face and fabric markers never seem to look quite right. I thought of adding the words to the ends of the pillow cases a while ago, but it was one of those projects I never got around to UNTIL we got new pillows. Shane and I both have different pillows now since I sleep on my side and he has a back sleeper pillow. When we upgraded pillows in partnership with Sleep Country Canada, I decided to pick up pillow protecters from there as well. They zip on and can be easily washed which is great (because we still have babies that lay in bed with us and drink their bottles) but then I can’t tell just by peeking in the pillow case which is mine after my kids toss them all into a pillow fort pile. That seemed like the perfect excuse to pull out the paint!

Bed made with white sheets and pillowcases hand lettered 'mine' and 'yours'

I’m really, really happy with how they turned out. I love that the lettering peeks out the sides of all the other decorative pillows we have on the bed, but your face actually doesn’t touch those parts of the pillow. And the fabric paint you can get now is SO soft… it wouldn’t matter if your face was touching it. I want to add this detail to all our pillow cases now! Shane has requested, ‘MR & MRS’ and I think, ‘HIS & HERS’ sound fun too… what other ones could you do? If I’m missing clever ones for his and hers pillow cases, be sure to tell me in the comments!

Alright… ready to learn how to make these babies?

Before we do… can I talk about how NICE it is to have a good pillow?! I’ve struggled with neck pain since an accident almost 10 years ago now and as much as I know a pillow is important… I’ve never upgraded. But holy smokes, you guys! I’m having way less headaches since the upgrade. I’m totally impressed. I don’t know that I will ever go back. Both Shane and I got these Microgel Caress Pillows in partnership with Sleep Country Canada- I chose the one for side sleepers so it’s designed to give more support to your neck and Shane got the stomach/back sleeper version of the same pillow. It feels like feather, but it’s a gel filling so it doesn’t irritate my allergies. I feel like I’ve now become a picky pillow person.

Two different types of pillows, DIY mine and yours pillow cases to tell them apart

Putting on a king size pillow cover with the lettering 'mine'

Okay… I’ll move on… but if you’re having neck issues, do yourself a favour and get a good pillow! Honestly, I’m so glad I have.

To make these DIY his and hers pillow cases, you’ll need:

  • Pillow Cases
  • Fabric Paint (I used DecoArt So Soft in black) & Brush (I prefer a round brush size 4)
  • Light box (I used my Cricut BrightPad) or an iPad set to a bright setting OR use a window with daylight
  • Paper & brush pen to mock up your design OR print out a font you love

Start by lettering your design on paper. You could totally print out a font you love instead. I wanted my designs to be really elongated so added extra space between the letters. When you’re happy with your design, slide it into your pillow case and turn on your light box. This will show you your design without tracing it onto the cover. I just painted directly onto the pillow cover on top of the light box. I added the tails to the letters after the fact to fill some of the white space on either side. When painting on fabric, you’ll find you need to reload your brush often. I also liked to go over each section to make sure I didn’t leave excess paint (I turned off the lightbox to check this) that might make for a rougher texture.

Most fabric paints suggest you set them with the iron, but this one skips that step (awesome!). I love how they look AND how they feel, you guys. And isn’t that simple? The light box works SO darn well to help transfer the design!
