DIY Spring Floral Arrangement- Farmers Market Style

Jun 04

I’ve picked out some beautiful spring flowers at the local Farmers Market. Here’s a list of my favourite spring flowers and how I put together this DIY Spring Floral Arrangement.

The sun is out, summer is definitely here and I couldn’t be happier. I’m finally recovering from being sick, and am feeling almost normal (although I still can’t hear very much- thank you, ear infection!) so I’ve been dying to get out of the house. Last weekend we packed the kids up and hit the local farmers market for the first time this year- it was so nice to fill our fridge with fresh veggies, and of course snag some seasonal flowers. I thought they would be perfect for my monthly floral challenge! (check out last month’s here)

I love the combination of spring florals- peonies make me a happy girl. By hitting the farmers market- where you can pick which flowers you’d like in your bouquet, you can get a gorgeous combination for less than a mix bouquet from the grocery store (you know the ones with daisies and mums-boooring). I love in big cities how there’s buckets of flowers in the streets where you can pick up a mix of local flowers- but around here, the weekly farmers market is your only opportunity for that! So here’s the flowers I picked out if you’d like to make something similar.

Spring Flowers for a DIY Floral Arrangement

  • 1 Allium
  • 1 Delphinium
  • 3 Stems Waxflower or other floral filler
  • 2 Peonies
  • 4 Double Peonies

I used a wider mouth vase so the flowers weren’t too bunched together. The allium has quite a thick stem, so you need to take that into account. First, I cut each stem down to the height of my vase, then I took off the leaves that would fall under the water line. I like the look of leaves with these flowers, but leaves below the waterline will make your flowers turn faster- and we want them to last.

I placed the peonies around the allium before adding in the delphinium and spray. The delphinium gives some height to the arrangement (and I like how wild it looks) and the wax flower fills the gaps.

It’s so simple- it’s great how easy it is to make something beautiful with the right flowers. I mean, who doesn’t love peonies? Also- have you seen allium growing? They grow like giant pom poms on a stick- the most whimsical flower. We’re not planning to plant anything this year (too much to do inside!) but when we get around to it, I’m definitely planning on allium.

Does your city have flowers available in the streets, or do you need to hit up farmers markets to get local florals? I’m planning to make farmers market a weekly tradition for our family, growing up we used to go and get honey sticks for a treat. Is farmers market something your family attends?

Enjoy the sun!

How are you so good at all this stuff? I haven’t been to the farmer’s market at all this year, and now I need to be sure to go next weekend! Your flowers are gorgeous!

Aw thanks Kala! I never make it as much as I’d like… but when I do, I never pass up the flowers. You should definitely make it happen!
