DIY Concrete look modern easter egg decor

Apr 05

These concrete look easter eggs are the perfect modern decor that suits almost any home style. If you’re not into the pastels and bright colours this easter season… might I suggest this DIY tutorial?

DIY Concrete Look Easter Egg Tutorial

I first shared these easter eggs last spring as part of a Dollar Store DIY challenge video for spring. I paired them with some dollar store moss in a large vase and they made beautiful mantel decor. I was back browsing the dollar store this spring and spotted a larger version of the same crafting eggs. I thought… the perfect reason to recreate them!

This time around, I asked my friend Tayla to follow my tutorial to recreate the project. I like to make sure that my tutorials are clear enough for someone to follow along without me helping and I’d say these ones were a great success! I put these eggs out in my spring living room tour this year and love how they look here in a simple black bowl.

I shared Tayla recreating this project over on Instagram and TikTok (I’m @colleenpastoor on both if you’re not following along!) and realized… I didn’t have a blog post to link to! So it’s time to make it easy for those of you who would rather see written instructions with photos!

Supplies for DIY Concrete Look Easter Eggs:

  • Paint (acrylic craft paint is great, chalk paint is fine- work with what you have)
  • Baking Soda
  • Paint Brush
  • Paper Towel
  • Faux easter eggs (mine are from the dollar store)

This modern easter egg decor is so simple to create- I promise. Start by mixing up your paint with baking soda. You can use baking soda or baking powder. I like the grit of the soda, but feel free to play around! The more you add, the grittier it will become until it’s like a paint paste. Keep it pretty painty for the first step.

Paint your easter eggs with a base layer of paint/baking soda mix. You want to get full coverage and use this as a base for everything else you’re going to add.

Next, you can start dabbing on the other colours of paint mixed with baking soda. This dabbing can be done with a paint brush but you’ll want to have paper towel to rub it in so you don’t have such obvious transitions between the colours. I used a much more gritty mix of paint and baking soda for this step to add lots of texture.

This gets messy and you don’t need to let each layer dry in between. I worked with three different tones of grey/beige/tan for my eggs. The ones I made last year I also had a soft green colour for. You can see them here in the little egg basket on my mantel this year. Let them dry completely before displaying in a beautiful bowl or vase!

What’s so great about this DIY is that you really can’t mess it up. Just keep dabbing paint and rubbing it in with your paper towel until you get an effect you’re happy with!
