Black + Textured Modern Master Bedroom Design Plans

Jan 14

Black Bedroom Design Plans collage with text overlay

In our last house, our master bedroom was the VERY last room to receive any kind of decor love. But this time around, we are excited to be working on it pretty early on! We just moved in this past summer and since then, have remodelled our kitchen, which resulted in flooring our entire main floor, and finished Aubrey’s Bedroom. We turned to outside and turned our carport into a garage workshop (which I’ll be revealing later this week!) and NOW… now it’s time for our bedroom!

In the fall, we shared our master closet before and after… and now that we’re doing our bedroom, we’re closing the door to our ensuite to feel like we’re in a finished space! Ha! Do you do that too? Like, we just can’t stop. But that will have to wait ’til next year.

So for this bedroom, we are going dark again. We were so smitten with the navy in our last bedroom and how cozy it felt having dark walls- a retreat from the chaos of a busy household. When we agreed on navy in our last place, my first request was actually black and Shane was a hard NO. That was too dark for him, way too bold and he couldn’t do it. But after living with navy for 5 years, it didn’t seem so scary and we’ve put one coat up on the wall and he’s the one telling everyone how good it’s looking. Black ‘aint that scary. But I do think it’s the RIGHT black that makes the difference.

When I was a teenager, we moved and my parents were always so great about letting us pick our own paint and design our rooms. I had black furniture (that bed frame is totally in our guest room now) and painted the walls white, with a deep purple accent wall and bold black trim and doors. Yeah. BLACK. But back then, picking the right black wasn’t a thing. Because people didn’t do black doors and trim (I was ahead of my time, what can I say). It was shiny and such a deep black- looking back… not a great choice.

This black is called Broadway from Behr and Shane describes it as being black with a chalky undertone. It doesn’t feel like a black hole. It feels cozy and wonderful but is certainly not a grey. We also chose to do it in a washable mat finish instead of the standard semi-gloss. It’s a much higher end looking finish I think and the dark colour doesn’t feel so light sucking with the mat finish.

The other thing that we found in doing our last bedroom dark is that by balancing it with lots of white… it doesn’t feel dark. White or light bedspread, white doors and trim, white ceiling, white full length curtains… there’s not a ton of dark left! So that’s our plan this time around too. And with a large bay window, that side of the room will definitely feel light and bright even with the black walls.

Okay before I tell you any more details… I *almost* forgot to show you the BEFORE! Here’s what it looked like:

YES… I am embarrassed of how big of a mess it was… but this was before our closet was done and that closet made such a world of difference for storage for us!

Okay… back to the plans…

We are also taking on another moulding wall! I wanted to try something a little different than the last time. We are partnering with Alexandria Moulding and Home Depot Canada to share a tutorial for this next week so keep your eyes out! I’m really excited for it! I was totally inspired by my girl Thalita’s bedroom wall for this one but we’re going with a more modern/ simple trim piece for ours.

Bed and bedding will essentially stay the same… because it’s expensive! Ha! The bed we totally love it’s this one from Leons Furniture. The duvet cover is this one from QE Home but isn’t available any more. It’s almost identical to this one just with the stripes running the other way. I am planning to switch up the throw pillows a bit just because these ones are older and pretty worn and I’d like to change the navy out since we’re moving to black. Also… who doesn’t want more pillows? The green velvet one in the design board is this one from H+M Home.

The other big change here is the lights. We are switching to these rad matte black fixtures from Globe Electric. We got them from Home Depot Canada and you guys, look at that price. They’re so darn affordable it’s crazy. For now, we’ve just changed them out but the next time we have our drywall finisher in, we will move them and have him patch the ceiling. The lights were put in for a queen bed by the previous owners and look a little silly with a king bed there. The light switch is behind the bed if we centre the bed on the lights so that’s why it’s off centre right now. We moved the light switch and I patched that but I can’t spray the ceiling to patch it so we are leaving that for now. We’d like to widen them up to have them fall over the nightstands.

Oh! Another thing I wanted to mention is that we are switching out all of our doors and door knobs in the main floor of the house. We did this in our last place as well (with 4 panel shakers there too!) and I can’t get over how much it changes the feel of a space. The door knobs we chose are these modern matte black ones from Schlage (we just ordered off of Amazon).

Alright! I think that’s really all there is to talk about… the macrame is DIY but I didn’t write a tutorial and the plant is this one from Amazon that I’m dreaming of ordering but it’s a little small and the price is a little outside what I’m willing to spend on a fake plant. But it’s so pretty.

I can’t wait to get this together! I would really love to put a reading chair and side table in the bay window since we don’t need a dresser in our room it feels way spacious (thank you to a well designed closet!). I am looking at this gorgeous chair from Article (and this side table) but haven’t pulled the trigger. Have you seen anything you love that’s similar? Send me all the links!
