Spring Home Tour- Modern Pops of Black

Mar 17

spring mantel decor with brush lettered painting above, vase of eucalyptus and letterboard

Happy spring, friends! *Almost* anyways. We still have snow on the ground, but with Easter less than a month away, I’m thinking about warmer weather. And spring decor! Last year I decorated for spring for the first time ever. I did a home tour on here and while I was totally happy with it, I was trying to really add spring to my otherwise neutral home and added in more colour than I really love to have. This year I wanted to stick more to my neutrals (with some black!) for our decorations. That meant doing less and I’m totally happy with it. Less is more, right?

This year I tried something different, though! I made a video home tour as well as the photos. The video is rad because you can see how the rooms tie together (something I get asked often is about layout!) so you can see the size of the space (it’s not that big at all). Plus… there’s a cute baby in there ;)

YouTube video

What did you think!? Not bad for my first video home tour, if you ask me ;) If you like to watch YouTube videos, I would so love if you subscribed to my channel over there!

Now… let’s talk details!

I’ve said this in almost every home tour I’ve posted- my favourite way to change things up seasonally is with fresh foliage. In the fall that’s autumn leaves, in the winter, that’s evergreen, and in the spring, summer and every other moment? That’s eucalyptus for me. I LOVE eucalyptus, you guys. The smell is just so lovely. The one here on my mantel is called seeded eucalyptus. On my island is actually faux eucalyptus and faux something else (kind of like dusty miller, but the leaves are a totally different shape). I have only ever really used real eucalyptus and florals but recently spotted these at Michaels and thought they were darn pretty for fake- and how nice to always have something instead of feeling like I always need to buy the real stuff!

Spring Letterboard: I'm so excited for spring I wet my plants

The other staple that I keep in my house year round but like to change up seasonally is my letterboards and photo frames with printables or artwork. I used to have quite a few chakboards, but I’ve slowly phased those out and now have a couple letterboards that I LOVE to play with and you can see that I swapped in that fun watercolour bunny on the mantel as well. That wooden letterboard is so unique, my friend Bethany and her husband over at This Little Estate actually make and sell them– all the money they get from that they put right into their Giving Back Initiative which I think is SO COOL so I had to order one.

Family living room decorated for spring- modern neutral decorations

I should probably put a room tour together of our living room now that it’s not decorated for the holidays anymore. But here’s a peek at it! If you are curious about furniture in the space, I link to all of it in this post! Other than the mantel, I spray painted a couple of my vases that didn’t get the use anymore a matte black and LOVE them now! That one on the coffee table with the blue hydrangeas was pink and the one on the mantel with the anemone (my FAVE flowers lately) are both spray painted.

Other little touches? I made this Easter egg pennant in my Facebook Live a couple weeks ago. I love how simple it is- for how quick it was to make, I get so many comments on this little guy when people come over. We also brought out my daughter’s bunny ears pillow– this was a DIY a few years ago and I’m still loving it. Lastly in this space is that little air plant terrarium I made on the end table. I made a YouTube video about it RIGHT HERE and will be sharing a blog post about it soon (as soon as I’m done writing this post!).

Speaking of things I’ve made a YouTube video about but still need to write the post for… that watercolour bunny on the mantel! It’s such an easy watercolour project to try if you haven’t tried watercolor before! I usually have a photo in there but didn’t have many ‘things’ to decorate for spring with, so I thought I’d make a little piece for in here. My favourite thing about it is the colours- I love these deep moody colours with the spring shape. It fits my style so much better than pastels that are typical of spring!

Over in my kitchen and dining room I kept it super simple. More greenery (that faux stuff on the counter), a little easter bunny (he’s actually one of my kiddos toys they brought out to help me decorate with- they’re cute, you guys), and always always a candle. Even in the spring and summer I decorate with candles- do you? I’ve had some people tell me that they are a winter decor piece, but I love a lit candle every season.

Wooden canvas Easter sign reads hip hop with bunny ears

I also made this cute wooden canvas ‘Hip Hop’ sign in my Facebook Live– isn’t that cute? It’s probably my favourite Easter decoration we have now. Then my most springish spring decor… a little basket of speckled easter eggs (both from Michaels). On my dining table, I wanted to do flowers but they don’t last forever, so I thought I’d put that money towards potted plants that I could plant in my garden once the ground thaws. I love the look of heather and it’s so easy to care for. The kids are helping me water them, so it’s fun for them to know they’ll get to grow in our yard afterwards. I didn’t want to buy three matching plant pots for something that would only live in my house for a month or two, so I removed the pink plastic wrap they came in and crumpled some black cardstock to make my own. I actually LOVE how these turned out for a last minute solution.

Well, there you have it! I so hope that you enjoyed a peek into my home this spring! I feel like my home and even my style has changed so much over the past year- looking back at my last year’s spring tour, I was so happy seeing how far we’ve come! I would love to hear if you decorate for spring and if so- what are some of your favourite ways to incorporate seasonal touches!

Love how you took traditional spring things and made them your own, and made them fit you and your home! Nice to know that decorating for the season doesn’t have to look the same as everyone else. Thanks for inspiring!
